The Dream Fulfilled
From November 1983 through June 1984, Brenda L. Street commuted from Columbia, Md. to Philadelphia, Pa. to run Hall Homes, a 38 bed Senior Boarding Home previously owned by her mother, Anne E. Hall. Mrs. Hall lost her battle with breast cancer in November 1983 and Brenda felt a need to continue her mother's business. After commuting between Maryland and Philadelphia for 10 years, Brenda decided that she had to find a way to realize her dream of starting a senior assisted living business in Maryland. On July 6, 1994, her dream began to materialize with the purchase of a house located at 4012 Buckingham Road, Baltimore, Maryland.
Elesy was Brenda's mother's maiden name. Accordingly, she chose Elesy Manor as the name of her business out of the great love and respect she had for her mother. Brenda was enamored with the notion that she could make Elesy Manor one of the most loving and caring Assisted Living homes not only in Baltimore County but the entire state of Maryland. To that end, she dedicated many long hours developing Elesy Manor into a place where seniors that needed assistance with their daily care could come and truly enjoy their new home. The first thing Brenda did to meet the challenge of achieving her ambitious goals and her dream was to convert the newly purchased house into a bright, warm and cheerful place that would feel like home the minute one walked through the front door. She than developed a daily program for her residents that included all of the county and state laws and regulations along with things she felt were necessary but not required. These included daily "daycare" like activities for residents that could not afford to attend an adult day care facility, outdoor activities such as picnics and gardening activities, special programs featuring musicians, magicians, church groups and other resident friendly activities. Brenda insisted that her staff meticulously follow all state and county regulations and she developed an outstanding working relationship with all state and county officials because of her exceptional attention to the smallest detail regarding state and county requirements. Her system for keeping required medical records was as thorough as those kept by the finest hospitals. She insisted that the meals were prepared in accordance with menus developed by a certified nutritionist and approved by county inspectors and she demanded that her staff keep the house spotless and free of dirt and bad odors.
As a result of Brenda's conscientious and diligent effort, Elesy Manor grew to the point where Brenda starting seriously thinking of expanding. In February 1996, 4010 Buckingham Road became available and in June 1996, it officially became a part of Elesy Manor. With the addition of 4010, Elesy Manor was licensed for 24 beds. The heavy administrative burden associated with record keeping imposed by the state made it necessary for Brenda to hire administrative help. Accordingly, Ann Sampson and Dorothy Keith, very competent assistant administrators, were hired. However, when they left Elesy Manor for family reasons, Brenda hired Ms. Kimberly Miller as her administrative assistant. In January 2001, her husband James H. Street, Jr. retired from the Federal Government to devote more time to all aspects of the business.
Brenda's diligent and dedicated effort to make Elesy Manor the best that it could be continued until the latter part of 2002, when she lost her short battle with cancer. In order to keep Brenda's “Dream.” alive, James Street Jr. and Kimberly Miller vowed to do everything in their power to keep Elesy Manor running in a manner that would make Brenda proud.
