“The Dream”: Recreation Activities
We have several residents at Elesy Manor that cannot afford to privately pay for attendance at a Senior Daycare Center and cannot qualify for daycare payment assistance from Medicaid Waiver. In order to meet the high standards of resident care established by Brenda, and as delineated in the Elesy Manor Mission Statement, we hired Ms. Elyse Posner, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, to serve as a part-time recreation therapist with the responsibility to provide a variety of activities for all of the residents that happen to be present at the times of her visits. We consider it necessary to keep our residents as active as possible during the day. Ms. Posner diligently and competently provides her services four days a week. The residents that participate in her specially designed activities really enjoy participating and they benefit from the interaction with one another. The activities provided by Ms. Posner are as follows:Mondays: Each Monday is current events day. A “hot topic”is selected from daily news events and the residents share their views and opinions on the subject. The discussions are insightful and stimulate the use of the residents' thought processes.
Wednesdays: The residents participate in arts and crafts on Wednesdays. They work on a variety of projects using all sorts of materials to build their projects. Ms. Posner structures the arts and crafts projects to allow residents of different cognitive abilities to participate.
Thursdays: Game day arrives each Thursday. The residents love bingo so much that it has evolved into the only game the residents are really interested in playing. They all participate and each one always wins a prize.
Fridays: Since everyone, regardless of age, benefits from well planned exercise, exercise day at Elesy Manor falls on Fridays. Ms. Posner provides exercise activities specially designed for everyone no matter how physically frail a resident may be. “Senior Stretch” is done by all of the residents even if they are in a wheel chair. Ms. Posner also uses light weights and a gizmo called an activity parachute to stimulate their muscles.
